The National Schoolboy Championships were inaugurated in Melbourne in 1923. Western Australia entered for the first time in 1925. The carnival has continued unbroken since 1947.

*In 2026 SSA will introduce the Australian Football 14 Years & Under National Championship, replacing the previously held 15 Years & Under Championship. This adjustment aligns with the AFL’s representative structure, which includes 16 Years & Under and 18 Years & Under National Championships.
Trial Cost
$20.00

$10 trial fee]
Tour Cost
Please be advised that if selected:
The total cost of the Championship is estimated at $1000 (this does not include any flights or accommodation), less fund raising.
[Note: Home Education students will be required to pay a $120 fee in addition to all other costs]
Travel Model
The School Sport WA preferred travel model is for students to travel and accommodate with their parent/guardian. Flights have been booked for team officials and their flight information will be provided at the parent information meeting.
Any variation to this model will be communicated at the initial trial.
Players will only attend 1 x Round 1 trial, and if successful 1 x Round 2 trial.

PLEASE NOTE: Due the large number to students trialling, individualized feedback will not be provided to students for the first and second round of trials.

Championships are open to all West Australian students, whether or not they are members of an affiliated club.
Students must meet the following criteria:
* Be a full time student at a secondary school
* Be 14 years or under as of the 31 December in the year of competition
* Advise your school that you will be attending the trials
* Complete the online nomination form.
SSWA is seeking nominations from students who would like to umpire (Field, Boundary or Goal) at the National Championship.
Nomination is open to all accredited umpires via the tab below.
Please note the age group you prefer to umpire and the gender.
If selected:
The cost of a HOME CHAMPIONSHIP will be approximately $800 – $1500 depending on the accommodation option.
The cost of an AWAY CHAMPIONSHIP will be between $2000 – $2700 dependent on venue and time on tour.
Subsidy Opportunity
SSWA is able to provide some subsidies towards travel costs, but ultimately the selected umpires will be required to fund their own trip to the CHAMPIONSHIP, similarly as players are expected to.
Selection is based on experience and qualifications and will be subject to the SSWA selection panel in discussion with local junior districts reference checks.
